Traditional Sports and Games (TSG) are part of Europe’s intangible heritage and a symbol of both its cultural diversity and common cultural background. TSG are an effective vehicle to encourage participation in Sport for All and physical activity, and they convey values of solidarity, diversity, inclusiveness, cultural awareness and peace. Unfortunately, no common understanding of the situation of TSG in Europe exists, let alone a coordinated approach to the promotion and provision of TSG opportunities.

In direct response to this need, the European TSG Platform project, co-funded by the Erasmus + Programme of the European Union, will create a central resource hub encompassing the three complimentary elements of research, policy and practice, enabling the future development of a coordinated approach to the preservation and promotion of European TSG.

The ETSGP Kick-Off meeting in Rome, Italy (January 18th – 20th, 2017)
Vision – A united Europe eternally rich in diverse TSG.

Mission – to create a European TSG Platform (ETSGP), serving as a central resource hub and ultimately a guide to the EU and its stakeholders for the safeguarding and promotion of TSG.

Primary Objectives – To:

  • Create a common understanding of the status of TSG in Europe
  • Preserve, promote and increase participation in TSG, Sport for All and HEPA, particularly among those less active
  • Encourage social inclusion, understanding, respect for others using TSG
  • Encourage heritage preservation and strong cultural identification at local, national and European levels
  • Strengthen the sense of ‘pride in being European’ in citizens across Europe.

Action Plan Summary:

  • Conduct an analysis of the current situation of TSG in Europe and publish an overview focussing on three key elements – policy, research and practice
  • Draw conclusions, identify key priorities and formulate recommendations for the safeguarding and promotion of European TSG
  • Define the ETSGP’s scope of work, vision, mission, objectives, structure, strategy, activities and budget requirements
  • Establish the ETSGP and broadly disseminate project results

Project Partners:

  • Municipality of Kavala, Greece
  • European Traditional Sports and Games Association, France
  • Flanders Traditional Sports and Games Association (VlaS), Belgium
  • Gerlev Sports Academy, Denmark
  • Italian Traditional Sports and Games Federation, Italy
  • University School of P.E., Poznan, Poland
  • Stichting Sport Fryslan, Netherlands

#BeActiveTAFISA

TAFISA is Proud to Announce the Release of the European Week of Sport Toolbox.

The European Week of Sport (EWoS) aims to promote sport and physical activity across Europe. The Week is for everyone, regardless of age, background or fitness level. With a focus on grassroots initiatives, it will inspire Europeans to #BeActive on a regular basis and create opportunities in peoples’ everyday lives to exercise more. In 2016 the EWoS will take place from September 10th to October 2nd in over 30 countries across Europe.

The European Week of Sport Toolbox (EWoS Toolbox) was developed in order to promote the European Week of Sport and make it easier for organizers at various levels to implement it. It includes a set of materials to empower European, national and local stakeholders to organise events as part of, and participate in the European Week of Sport. The materials are handbooks including recommendations and good practice examples tackling the various aspects of the EWoS, complemented by an introductory video and infographics, which have been developed to make the toolbox more attractive and accessible to all stakeholders Europe-wide.

The EWoS Toolbox features:

1. An introductory video;

2. “How to Organise a National Event within the European Week of Sport – A Guide for National Coordinating Bodies” handbook (including a generic 10-step approach on how to organise a national event or week of sport as part of the EWoS) and its corresponding infographic;

3. “How to Participate in the EWoS – A Guide for Local Stakeholders” handbook (including a generic 10-step approach on how to participate in and organise events as part of the EWoS, as well as a chapter with communication recommendations) and its two corresponding infographics;

4. “Focus Theme Education: Tips, Recommendations & Good Practices” handbook and its corresponding infographic, including advice on what can be done, and how, as part of this focus theme, to the attention of national and local stakeholders;

5. “Focus Theme Workplace: Tips, Recommendations & Good Practices” handbook and its corresponding infographic, including advice on what can be done, and how, as part of this focus theme, to the attention of national and local stakeholders;

Take Back Your Streets!

Take Back Your Streets… Take Back Your Future! is a new TAFISA program funded by The Coca-Cola Foundation and launched during the 24th TAFISA World Congress 2015 in Budapest.

Learn about the program's successes in 2016 and how you can get involved: Take Back Your Streets... Take Back Your Future Implementation Workbook

THE CHALLENGE

The world is facing a physical inactivity crisis of epidemic proportions. It is bankrupting economies and decimating human potential. It is unacceptable, but it is not unstoppable. We must unite to find new ways to bring physical activity back to the daily lives of all people.
A huge, currently underestimated resource is open space.
Just Imagine if every street, path, park and other public spaces were utilized for physical activity and play. Our world could be one giant play park!

Take Back Your Streets!

Take Back Your Streets… Take Back Your Future! aims to bring physical activity back to open spaces for the use of all citizens – in festivals, events, games, play and the everyday life – and educate community leaders to build a brighter future through physical activity. It is designed for national and local organizations, municipalities, communities and citizens who wish to tackle the epidemics of inactivity by combining their local effort with a global commitment, thus striving to build a common voice for the benefit of the generations of tomorrow.

A DOUBLE STRATEGY

Take Back Your Streets… Take Back Your Future! is unique since it combines practice and theory:

  1. Take Back Your Streets stands for any grassroots sport event that makes use of urban open spaces such as squares, streets, etc. and is open for every citizen to actively participate.
  2. Take Back Your Future is a workshop to train key local stakeholders, decision makers, managers and community leaders to foster their understanding of the untapped potential and benefits of Active Cities.

Only the combination of both – the event and the workshop – guarantees for the ultimate success of the project!

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF PUBLIC SPACES
Public and open spaces are where we grow up, discover the world, make friends, have fun, spend family and leisure time and later in life commute to school, university and work. They are the very essence of community life and have the intrinsic potential to offer opportunities to be active. Take Back Your Streets… Take Back Your Future! is about maximizing their potential.

Take Back Your Streets!

2016 marks the launch of the pilot phase of Take Back Your Streets… Take Back Your Future! aimed at testing it on the ground while learning from local experiences and giving it strength for a 2017 roll-out.

TAFISA’s commitment to the promotion of Traditional Sports and Gems (TSG) is visible through several programs TAFISA led or is involved in, such as Recall or the TAFISA World Sport for All Games happening every 4 years. In order to further promote and help reintroduce TSG, TAFISA in partnership with local universities opened Regional Traditional Sports and Games Centres.

The TAFISA Regional Traditional Sports and Games Centres of H.V.P. Mandal, Amravati, India and Gerlev Sports Academy, Denmark are quite active and doing well, almost 2 years after their launch in September 2014.

H.V.P. Mandal, Amravati, India

Developed in order to safeguard and reintroduce TSG, showing their importance both for the culture they represent and the innovative way in which they can help make the world more active, the centres provide academic courses on TSG, seminars, training camps and have various activities throughout the year. They also serve as research centres for TSG.

Gerlev Sports Academy, Denmark

Gerlev hosted a course on the subject: “Recall: Games of the past – Sports for Today – How to play it…?” on March 14-18 2016. The Amravati centre also offers 4-week Summer courses in specific disciplines such as yoga or some TSG (Malkhamb- Pole and Rope, Kabaddi and Kho-kho).

Following the success of the first TSG centres, TAFISA wishes to continue their development. Any organization interested in opening such centres is welcomed to contact TAFISA at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
